About Macadamia Nuts

The macadamia nut is considered to be one of the finest and most luxurious nuts. It belongs to the Proteaceae family and are the fruit of the evergreen macadamia tree. Although macadamia was introduced in Kenya from Australia in 1946, it was not until 1964 that the Ministry of Agriculture initiated the planting of its seedlings by small-scale farmers mainly in Eastern and Central Provinces of Kenya. Munthor sources the nuts from Embu, Thika and Meru amongst other regions. Macadamia farming offers an important source of income for producers and smallholder farmers in Kenya. Kenya is currently the third top macadamia producer, with a global market share of 13 percent.
